What is a Track System?

A horse track system, often called a “Paddock Paradise,” is a management method that creates a narrow, continuous path (track) around a pasture’s perimeter, mimicking wild horses’ movement to encourage natural roaming, foraging, and exercise, improving physical and mental health by spreading resources like hay, water, and shelter to promote constant movement and reduce boredom and obesity.
How it Works
Mimics Nature: It’s inspired by wild horses that travel miles daily between food, water, and shelter, creating worn pathways.
Encourages Movement: Key resources (hay, water, shelter) are placed far apart on the track, forcing horses to walk and stay active.
Varied Footing: The track can incorporate different surfaces (sand, wood chips, grass, hills) for hoof strength and joint health.
Enrichment: Obstacles like logs, rocks, or scratching posts are added to provide mental stimulation and encourage natural behaviors.
Key Benefits
- Weight Management: Constant movement helps control weight and prevents obesity
- Mental Well-being: Reduces boredom, stress, and stereotypical behaviors (like cribbing) by promoting natural foraging and herd interaction.
- Physical Health: Supports musculoskeletal and gastrointestinal health through increased activity and diverse terrain.
