What do we Feed and Why?

We believe in a forage based diet, meaning we offer free choice forage (Hay/Grass) 24/7 and supplement with grain based on the individual needs of each horse in our care.

Grain

Our priority is the health and well being of all equines in our care. Our choice of feed is a 1:1 combination of Tribute wholesome blend senior and Tribute wholesome blend balancer ensuring a high protein/high fiber, low sugar and starch diet safe and complete for all ages.

Hay

Horses are designed to have continual forage in their systems. For optimal health and lower risks of colic we feed forage 24/7.

We provide the best hay available either straight Alfalfa, Straight Timothy or a combination of the two depending on your horses individual needs.

Alfalfa

Alfalfa is a nutrient-dense legume forage for horses, providing high protein, energy, calcium, and vitamins, making it great for growing, lactating, underweight, or performance horses, and it can help buffer stomach acid.

Benefits

  • High in nutrients: More digestible energy, protein, calcium, and vitamins than most grasses.
  • Good for specific needs: Helps underweight horses gain weight, supports muscle, and provides buffer for ulcers.
  • Low in NSCs: Lower in nonstructural carbohydrates (sugars/starches) than many grasses, potentially good for metabolic issues.
  • Palatable: Horses often prefer it, making it great for picky eaters

Timothy

Timothy hay is a popular, highly digestible grass hay for horses, ideal for supporting healthy digestion, weight management, and dental health due to its high fiber and balanced nutrients, making it great for most horses, including performance, overweight, colic-prone, or metabolic horses.

Benefits

  • Digestive Health: High fiber promotes gut health, regular bowel movements, and helps prevent issues like gastric ulcers and colic
  • Weight Management: Moderate energy and protein levels are good for easy keepers and overweight horses.
  • Dental Care: The fibrous nature helps naturally wear down teeth.
  • Shiny Coat & Muscle: Supports a healthy coat and muscle development.
  • Versatile: Suitable for all life stages, from growing horses to performance animals

Tifton

Tifton 44 offers several benefits for horses, making it a preferred choice among horse owners.

Nutritional Value
Tifton 44 is known for its low sugar content, which is beneficial for horses prone to weight issues, laminitis, or founder. Many veterinarians recommend it as a primary forage for these conditions.

Digestibility
Compared to Coastal Bermuda grass, Tifton 44 is easier for horses to chew and digest. This can help prevent digestive issues, such as impaction

Supplements

Supplements are the responsibility of the horses owner to provide but we do have a few recommendations of supplements that we feed our own horses.

Custom Equine Nutrition: Vermont Blend Forager Balancer

Typically you will need three or more supplements to balance grass hay: trace minerals, magnesium and sodium. On top of that, horses who are lacking topline or have poor hoof quality can benefit from the addition of the amino acids that are most deficient in the equine diet. Lastly there is the digestive tract. A healthy digestive tract will play a role in all aspects of your horse’s health. Including a prebiotic in your horse’s diet ensures a healthy environment for all the beneficial microflora. When you combine these nutrients separately, you end up feeling like your own personal feed manufacturer, mixing this and that. Vermont Blend came about by wanting horse owners to have an easier way.

Ground Flax

Flaxseed is one of the most beneficial supplements you can add to a horse’s diet. It is the richest plant-based source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid that reduces inflammation, supports skin and coat health, and helps balance the immune system. Most horse owners notice visible improvements in coat quality within a few weeks, and the research backs up benefits that go well beyond appearance.
